Sachs to EU Parliament: Stop Depending on the US

Jeffrey Sachs tells the European parliament that they need a European foreign policy independent of the United States. The European parliament is the only democratic political institution in Europe, the only one that represents the people, but they have no power, which is exercised by the European Commission, which is made up of bankers. Can the EU parliament find some way to exert democratic power over the bankers? Sachs ends up by asserting the obvious truth that everyone knows, which is that the world has abundant resources for all if we can learn to share them, using amazing scientific and technological advances. The only thing that prevents a bright future for humanity is war. Sachs says that we must develop international institutions that will permit differences to be settled without war, as the League of Nations and the United Nations tried to be. It is imperialism that prevented either from succeeding. As imperialism dies, there may be an opportunity for such an institution to succeed.
