Neocons also assured GW Bush that invading Iraq would be a “cakewalk.” How can these people get everything wrong, yet remain in the highest levels of government? We have very stupid leaders.
Blackmailed?
I believe the “supporters” I wrote about in response to JanetC (above) are not above using blackmail to get their subordinates into position and many of the subordinates themselves are probably not above blackmail either.
They remain in positions of influence because have very developed close and trusted relationships with financially and/ or politically powerful supporters who benefit directly from wars or the usurpation of resources. These supporters do not see the outcomes as they “get everything wrong”. They have profited.
