Alexander — you need to get your facts straight about impeachment. The House impeaches, the Senate convicts and removes. Like Clinton, Trump has been impeached but not convicted and removed from office.
In the US system impeachment by the house is analogous to an indictment, with the trial being the sole responsibility of the Senate. In keeping with the comparison with criminal charges and trials, it would be fair to say that if the senate fails to convict, then the result was in fact an acquittal. Since in criminal trial, the accused does not continued to be under indictment, or referred to as the accused, after an acquittal, it is reasonable to make an analogous statement that once an impeached person has been acquitted they cease to be impeached. I would argue that President Zelenskiy’s “reckless” behaviour matches the profound sense of betrayal felt by people that have been led “down the primrose path”, as Prof. Mearsheimer explained in 2014. The false promises to help Ukraïne “as long as it takes”, after ordering Zelenskiy to not sign the Istanbul peace agreement in April 2022, would be an especially cruel reminder.
