Sometimes I wonder if it is possible that Russia is sandbagging its success in Ukraine in order to keep the Western world believing they have some chance of success. By doing so, they could slowly bleed the US / NATO alliance and weaken it to a greater extent than if it won a quick and decisive victory. Perhaps Russia is playing a much longer game than they are being given credit for doing….
I tend to agree. I think Putin is gaging public opinion in the West and watching the erosion of support for Ukraine.
When it gets low enough, I think we’ll see Putin pull the trigger for the final solution.
I think this is very much what Russia is doing – demilitarise the West as much as possible, kill as many Ukr fighting age men, and maybe women although I doubt that, as possible, in order to eliminate as far as possible any Western escalation in the coming decade. The West’s economies are imploding, and they will be tempted or driven to go to war. But the West is dependent on the Global South & BRICS+ for resources, especially oil. Oh no. what total hypocrisy. After promoting the Ukraine lies for more than two months that they had shot down two Russian AWACs and a large number of Russian jets (and initially laughing about it), Alexander Mercouris now states that he was always totally sceptical about these Ukrainian claims. What a laugh. The joker of London.
