I surmise Austin was privately given an ultimatum that the mainland US could be targeted, should Ukr attack deep into Russia with long-range missiles.

Reunification of all historic Russian territory absolutely is the correct conclusion – among other reasons, because the Black Sea must be kept out of reach of the Western powers. Otherwise, more aggression will coming from their naval forces in the future.

Almost all these newspaper commentators you quote are opinionated, amateur war game players, and fools to boot. Whilst its worth hearing of their general drift in an analyis of what goes on, best not to over-labour relaying their every word on events reported which quickly becomes tedious, in terms of analyis; just a breif summary woud do, and breif statement of their reversal of opinion when reality catches up with them.
