Latin Americans are always angry when USA people call their own country “America”. The real America, of course, is the entire New World – North, Central, and South America. By that standard, “Gulf of America” would be a reasonable name. But the USA and everyone in it would have to cease calling their country “America”.
It’s as if India were to call itself “Asia”, or Nigeria were to call itself “Africa”.
Jealousy is the dominant reason for that anger.
The people in the United States identify themselves as “Americans” and are called “Americans” by every Country in the world.
No other Country in North, Central or South America is referred to as “America” or calls it’s citizens “Americans” nor does any Country in the world refer to them as “America” or “Americans”.
The Real and only America is recognized worldwide as The United States.
I suspect that the reason people call the US “America” is because the US is the largest and the richest and most powerful nation of the American continent and the fact that it’s the only nation on the American continent which was engaged in two world wars also made it more prominent than the many other countries of this continent. .

I agree with you; I had a Colombian student who told me how amazed she was when she heard she wasn’t American! Having taught many students from Latin America, I have always referred to the US as North America or the US, explaining why, and many have thanked me for it.
If the Yanks want to change the name, I would suggest that the Gulf of the Americas would be more logical
Mr Mercouris frequently denies that he has any special military expertise, but for my money he makes very good sense – especially at the strategic level.
With all the work and the research he does, he has probably picked up more military expertise than he thinks.
