I totally agree with the significance of those FT articles. For Trump, however, this isn’t a matter of western defense burden being unequally shared (as I think he viewed NATO in his 1st term). For the US, the debt is rapidly growing and >130% of GDP. Trump is trying to find a balance between cutting spending to control debt and risking a severe recession in doing so, or ignoring the problem and risking eventual hyperinflation.
