I agree it is impossible to explain the behaviour of European political elites, but perhaps the question that might aid in understanding the situation is: what are their options? Apparently, rebellion is out of the question because it is tantamount to political suicide without any benefits. Holding one’s nose and following the herd, at least, promises some lucrative post after one’s political career ends.
