The direct route from Karelia to Kaliningrad would overfly all three Baltic states, and would cross only the very eastern part of Estonia. Obviously the Russian aircraft had to fly almost due West along the Gulf of Finland, where the national air spaces claimed by Finland and Estonia notoriously come close to meeting, leaving hardly any room for aircraft to remain in international air space.
I wonder if any of NATO loudmouths thought about the usual roles for MiG-31s. Such as launching Kinzhals…

Trying to cut off Russia from the Baltic would be a terrible blunder. During the battles for Guadalcanal in WW2, so many ships were sunk nearby that one sea area was nicknamed “Ironbottom Sound”. NATO can have one of those of its own if it really tries.

I am 95% sure that the Russians did not violate Estonian air space. They are usually quite careful about such things, and right now precautions must have been redoubled. If there is an incident, it will not be provoked by Russia.
