“Security guarantees” seem to be ill-defined and, in reality, quite imaginary. They sound like the kind of assurances that governments used to give one another, and which on many occasions directly caused major wars. Take, for example, the assurances made by the British and French governments to Poland that they would intervene should Germany attack Poland. When Germany did invade Poland, Britain and France declared war on Germany, but were utterly unable to help Poland in any way. It appears that at least a few people in Europe are beginning to understand just how screwed they really are. If things go sideways in the Middle East, it is going to impact Europe in a very negative way. If Iran shuts down the Straits, the price of Oil and LNG in Europe will double and the European economies which are already slipping into recession will spin into chaos.
