American forces are based at the same locations in the Western Pacific as when the Cold War ended in 1990. China’s naval and air power have grown massively since then, matching its economic growth. The threat from large missiles is far greater due to precision guidance systems. China has thousands of missiles that can bombard American military bases in minutes, blasting big holes in runways and aircraft hangars.
In a war with China, most aircraft at American bases in the Western Pacific will be wiped out during the first weeks. Studies have shown that our 200 high-tech fighters flying from a few bases will be overwhelmed by a thousand Chinese fighters flying from dozens of bases.
