Mr Merz is right in a way – a rather perverse way. I suppose he blames the USA for persuading him and his colleagues to sever relations with Russia.

It was Trump who in his first term tried to stop Nord Stream 2 from coming to fruition, with Biden succeeding in actually destroying it. The comments on the YouTube video seem to ignore this, as if Trump were correct to oppose Germany’s purchase of Russian fuels. They only remember the Germans laughing at Trump in 2018, but seem to forget why they were laughing at him. What was Trump implying then? Russia was always a reliable supplier unlike the USA. With respect to Mr Mercouris, whatever may have been the case in 1941 there was no “loathing” of Russia in Germany before WW1. It was generally accepted that Bismarck had been right (not so long before) to say that secret of diplomacy was to make a good treaty with Russia. The Germans launched their intended knockout attack on France out of justified fear that, if given time, the Russians would catch them in a war of two fronts.
