I would argue that President Macron took things very personally after the 60+ French legionaires were killed and exposed in Ukraïne. I also recall that the French ambassador to Moscow had been summoned and was rebuked for several hours by the Russian foreign minister. Macron appears to have changed considerably after that incident.

Europe needs to be very careful. While I think the possibility of an all out nuclear exchange involving the US is unlikely, I think that a limited nuclear exchange between Europe and Russia is more conceivable. From the US perspective, a limited exchange would benefit the US, and the US has demonstrated in the past it is willing to sacrifice Europe for its own benefit.
Unless Russia sees that the US is the one calling the shots in Europe. I vaguely remember someone warning that being surrounded by two whole oceans won’t protect the USA from having war on its soil for the first time within living memory.
Russia could actually win a nuclear war against Europe, but against the US would be the end of humanity….
