Loads of people on social media bleating about how the US are asset-stripping Ukraine to try and get their money back. Of course they are all ignorant of history and it was pointed out to them that the US did this to most of Europe and the UK during and after WW2. Part of the conditions for getting help – financial, weapons, Lend Lease and eventually manpower, was that, for example, the UK, would give up large parts of the mineral/gold/etc rights in various parts of their Empire and, eventually, give up the Empire altogether and open trade up to… Read more »

No one with a working brain thought that Russia would attack the EU or that anyone else would attack the EU. Poland and the Baltic states wanted the US to move its military bases to their territories not for defense, but because those bases generate wealth and boost GDP. The US had huge bases in Germany, which contributed to Germany’s economy. Poland didn’t want those bases moved because they feared a Russian attack—because, as I said, no one with a working brain believed the EU was in military danger. If they want Russia to destroy as much of Ukraine as possible—because they see Ukraine as part of Russia’s sphere of influence and a Russian ally—then they need to ensure Ukraine keeps fighting. All this theater about Russia is really about keeping Ukraine in the fight, sacrificing itself for the West. The West cannot tell the truth because they need Ukrainians to keep dying for their cause. To give you an example, imagine a little Ukrainian boy—let’s name him Olaf. He and his family spoke Russian their whole lives, using it as their main language, and they regularly consumed Russian media.
Now, suppose little Olaf’s father was drafted into the Ukrainian army and died at the hands of the Russians. Do you think Olaf will still see Russians as his brethren and allies? Will he still want to speak the Russian language and consume Russian media?
This is the derussification I am talking about.
