Jeffrey Sachs: We Are Now in the Early Days of World War III

Jeffrey Sachs: When Trump says he will pick the next leader of Iran, it sounds outlandish and crazy, and it is. But picking other country’s leaders has been US practice since the end of WW2, including the last time we did it to Iran back in 1953. Sachs also recalls the time we heard Victoria Nuland speaking on the phone with our ambassador to Ukraine picking the next leader of Ukraine after the coup. Trump is just following in that grand old tradition. Picking other country’s leaders has been unstated US policy since the death of FDR and the assassination of JFK, but Trump is so megalomaniacal that he proudly states it. He may be hurting the CIA this way since he has made what was once covert public, so people can see it. Trump’s personal madness mirrors the national madness of US hegemonism that got worse after the Soviet Union collapsed and the imperialists thought they had established world dominance. How long will the American people put up with it now that they can see it? With the interruption of the oil and gas supplies, we face economic collapse, another Great Depression. Will the American people be like the Germans in the 1930’s and follow a Hitler? Or will they do what Americans did in the 1930’s and elect an FDR? I still believe in the American people.  In Vietnam it took more than five years before opposition to the war began to coalesce. It is already stronger than that now. Sachs says we are heading for World War 3 unless “somebody” somehow puts a stop to it. Thank goodness there are sane, responsible, adult governments in Russia, China and Iran that can manage and quarantine this madness without triggering nuclear war. I hope that such a leader will emerge in this country as well.

The USA has destroyed a girls’ school with over 150 children and their teachers. It has deliberately murdered the Supreme Leader and most of his closest colleagues. It has cold-bloodedly sunk an Iranian frigate, leaving its crew to drown.

The destruction of at least one US aircraft carrier would not be enough to balance the books.

Mr Hegseth’s remarks sound exactly like those of the most extreme Nazis.

Apart from being quirky and discredited in his own time, Hobbes suffered from ignorance. Today science has learned a lot; for instance, that Hobbes’ imaginary picture of the “state of nature” was completely wrong. Rather than all individuals being pitted against one another, humans evolved right from the start in families and troops. After all, we are cousins of chimps, though not descended directly from them.

If Hobbes had known what we know now, he would have taken as the social unit not the individual, but the extended family or maybe the tribe.
