Trump keeps talking peace, while he gives Netanyahu the green light to commit atrocities in Gaza, the West Bank, Lebanon and Syria, and the go ahead to bomb Iran. The whole idea of “a deal” is itself a propaganda stroke by the US government. It’s not a used car sale! Iran is a sovereign nation and it is entitled to conduct its interior and foreign policies in any way it wishes, just as long as it complies with international law – which it does, scrupulously.
What Mr Trump and his acolytes are saying is, as Mr Christoforou rightly says, absolute nonsense. The USA has no standing to negotiate with Iran about what Iran does in compliance with international law.
As Sir Winston Churchill said, “Jaw jaw is better than war war”.
On the other hand I have a sneaking hope that the USA does try to attack Iran. I would so like to see it get a broken jaw – and Israel too, if possible – that it almost seems worth the risk.
Mr Trump’s custom of posting to social media is analogous to a deadly weapon with a hair trigger. Normal procedures exist for a reason: important statements should be scrutinised and carefully checked by subject matter experts. “Write once, check twice”. One of these days Mr Trump will post something that blows up in his face.
