That Mr Trump could not control events if he once attacks Iran is just one instance of the general principle, long known to soldiers and historians: it’s easy to start a war, but once started it takes on a life of its own. And often burns those who started it.

The Iranians are not at all naive. They know that these two are completely out of their depth and I can’t imagine why anyone would send a couple of Jewish property developers to represent the US in high-level political negotiations. Is there nobody with the necessary expertise in the whole country?
