Trump opens windows with his mouths public utterances and closes them with the actions of his hand. Diplomacy keeps those windows open, not hard business negotiations. I don’t think Trump knows how to do diplomacy, his appointments don’t indicate it, or even understands the perhaps sublime differences between the two approaches. At least Trump opens public discussion windows, it’s better than nothing, and Putin knows how to work with very little. I would be pleasantly surprised if Trump can break through his own narcissism in time to learn how to do the diplomacy needed to get the same favorable result… Read more »

You guys seem to be taking what the politicians say at face value. In reality, there are two streams of discourse: the one for public consumption, which will always be aggressive and positive; and one they use among themselves, behind the scenes. I believe these “leaders” know full well they cannot beat Russia in any kind of war, which is why their rhetoric is so belligerent, but their actions are cowardly.

Better not contradict or belittle Habeck, or you’ll find yourself in prison so fast it’ll make your head spin. It’s apparently illegal under German law even to mock him.

Not only did they “give the Soviet Union away”, they very foolishly gave the Ukraine away. A handful of security troops in Kiev in 1991 would have saved millions of lives and the destruction of half the country. It was as if Texas, Iowa, and New Jersey had decided to secede from the USA – and been allowed to, without any resistance.

If the New Testament can be believed, Jesus Christ had a “different” way of communicating.

Many people, especially in the West, have no understanding of parables.

Right near the end Mr Mercouris put his finger on something very, very important – not just for diplomacy, but for the entire rotten state of the West. He said that in business you can do a deal, then move on to someone else; but in diplomacy the other person is always there and so it doesn’t do to cheat or lie. That is actually the difference between a hunter-gatherer band, a “primitive” village, or any other natural society and today’s vast national and international communities. In the latter, crooks and villains can always slip away, disappear into the crowd,… Read more »
