The penal colonies that let prisoners work outside are not meant for murderers. Actually those are more human way of imprisonment. Everything is better than rotting closed in cell.
Even in Soviet times, prisoners in so called gulag let relatively normal life. I recommend you to read memoir of anyone except the liar Solzhenitsyn, who himself admitted he was lieying about conditions.
I have read all 3 Volumes of the The Gulag Archipelago by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, and he certainly did not make it up, as it was a collection of memories from many people within the gulag death camps.
