Alexander’s apologies for his German pronunciation are what one would expect from such a conscientious gentleman. Actually, all his foreign languages seem very acceptable to me – and far beyond what one expects of an Englishman. (I’m Scots, by the way).

“We had to destroy democracy to save it”.

It’s the American way.

I like the parallel with Lincoln. He was adept at inserting one little word that could entirely change the meaning of a statement. In 1847, for example: “Any people, anywhere, being inclined and having the power, have the right to rise up and shake off the existing government, and form a new one that suits them better. Yes, Vagen-connect, not Waggin-necked. Another German name that is frequently mispronounced is John Mearsheimer. I suspect that the correct way to pronounce it is Mears-heimer. Not Mear-sheimer as most people say. The name seems to imply a person who hails from a place called Mears. Possibly referenced Moers, near Duisburg.

Alexander says he doesn’t understand some Kiev military decisions. I suggest that their thought processes and decisions are very similar to Hitler’s. His mistakes were caused largely by:

  1. Being mainly motivated by political and economic, rather than purely military, considerations.
  2. Being based on personal experience of an earlier war – in Hitler’s case, WW1 – when things worked differently. (It’s not only generals who are always prepared to fight the last war).
  3. Hubris caused by previous perceived successes.

Zelensky is fighting mainly a public relations war. He has to effectively persuade NATO countries to always send him more ‘weapons and money.’ That leads Ukraine to making war for show, rather than to win. Russia is relentlessly bleeding Ukraine of manpower. Russia having greater numbers of troops, has always been the decisive factor. This has been known to both sides before the war began. It has always been suicidal for Zelensky that he did not sign the agreement that would have avoided the war entirely. He had hopes of dragging the US or another NATO country into the war.… Read more »
