Apparently, in 2014 Ukraine borrowed 17 Billion from the World Bank (IMF). In return they had to lift the ban on private sector land ownership in the country. Since then Monsanto, BlackRock and Vanguard have purchased over 20 million hectares or 70% of all Ukraine farmland. I suspect the current BlackRock deal will be some financial instrument to make up for the fact that they are going to lose a large part of the valuable black earth farmland to Russia because it is in the Donbass and Crimea. I wasn’t aware their ownership was 70%, I thought it was 30%,what a tragedy!! I do know that the grain that was shipped out of Ukraine was from foreign owned Ukraine farmland, and it went to the EU primarily. I read that it was all GMO animal food. Now with Russia’s focus on organic crops, will Russia return these fields to both the people and to organic farming once the war ends? That will be interesting to watch.
