On 27 June 1954, exactly 70 years ago, the world’s first nuclear power plant (NPP) was launched. The plant in question was the renowned Obninsk Nuclear Power Plant, constructed in the Kaluga region 120 kms south of Moscow in the then Soviet Union. Rhod Mackenzie looks at the history of the plant and what were the key factors that led to its creation and its role in the modern nuclear energy sector in the World.
