On this day, the 22nd of June in 1941, the darkest period in Russian and Soviet history commenced. It was the beginning of the Great Patriotic War.

In 1941 Hitler’s fascist armies were considered the strongest and most advanced in the world, but on the 9th of May 1945, they surrendered after being crushed by the power and resolve of the Soviet Union.

Today, President Putin along with prominent Russian politicians and military leaders laid a wreath at the Eternal Flame at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the wall of the Moscow Kremlin.

In spite of the heavy downpour, President Putin did not use an umbrella. He stood open to the elements just as the heroes of the Great Patriotic War stood down the face of unimaginable aggression. It was a small yet moving gesture which demonstrates the Russian President’s love of his country and his profound understanding of its history.

Soviet soldiers won the European war and destroyed the fascist German army. The world owes a huge debt to the brave people of the former Soviet Union for being by far the most significant force in saving the world from Nazi tyranny.

WE will have to wait until the next century for that to happen. After 70 years of how the US won WW2 only those that look up history outside of the western sphere will you get an answer. I dont remember when I was at school that Russia was even involved in WW2. It was my mother who told me.

Even the heavens cried for the great sacrifice that was made by the Soviet soldiers – Putin once again showed what a great leader and statesman he is. Bravo!
