Turnbull Trashes Morrison, Abbot & Trump As ‘climate Change Deniers’ by The Duran
The Duran Quick Take: Episode 449. The Duran’s Alex Christoforou and Editor-in-Chief Alexander Mercouris discuss the BBC interview with former Australian PM Malcolm Turnbull, who sounded off about the fires raging in Australia, placing the blame squarely on current Australian PM Scott Morrison.
Australian PM Scott Morrison has been accused of lacking leadership during the bushfire crisis – by the man he replaced after a party room coup.
Malcolm Turnbull, who was deposed in 2018, told the BBC that Mr Morrison had misled the country by “downplaying” the influence of global warming.
Mr Morrison apologised last month for taking a US holiday amid the fires. He has insisted his policies are adequate.
But Mr Turnbull said he “cannot explain” his successor’s approach.
In a wide-ranging interview, Mr Turnbull also said US President Donald Trump was the world’s “leading climate denier” and that America’s lack of leadership was “extremely damaging”.
Mr Turnbull said “everybody knew we were in a very dry time” before the fire season, and that it “was likely to be very bad”.
“Rather than doing what a leader should do… [Mr Morrison] downplayed it, and at times discounted the influence of climate change, which is just nonsense from a scientific point of view. So that’s misleading people,” said Mr Turnbull.
“Then of course [he] chose to go away on holiday in Hawaii at the peak of the crisis. So I can’t explain any of that.
“It’s just not consistent with the way in which a prime minister would or should act in a national crisis like this.”
Since September, bushfires have scarred Australia. At least 30 people have died, livelihoods have been lost along with thousands of homes, while the catastrophic impact on wildlife may never be known.
Mr Morrison has conceded he caused “great anxiety in Australia” by taking his family to the US as record-breaking heat exacerbated fires.
“I know there are some who’ve tried to make political points and score points in the midst of these disasters, and that’s disappointing,” he said before Christmas.
He asserted that climate change was “one of many factors” responsible for the blazes.
As the fires have raged, so has the debate about climate change and its part in Australia’s destructive summer.
Mr Turnbull took aim at former colleagues in the governing Liberal Party, accusing another ex-prime minister, Tony Abbott, of being “probably the most prominent climate denier in Australian politics, but there are plenty of others” who were engaged in a “war against science”.
“It is an extraordinarily irrational and self-destructive approach,” Mr Turnbull said.
Mr Turnbull’s prime ministership began in 2015 when he removed Mr Abbott, a long-time rival. He was in power for three years before being ousted in similar fashion.
It was a fevered period in Australian politics, and Mr Turnbull was castigated by a senior minister as being spiteful and indecisive. He also faced criticism externally for not doing more while in power.
Shortly before he was replaced, Mr Turnbull abandoned his commitment to set an emissions reduction target in legislation, in what critics viewed as a last-ditch concession to his party’s right wing.
Australia’s emissions target has long been criticised as inadequate for a wealthy nation. The 2030 target of a 26% reduction on 2005 levels is one of the weakest among G20 nations.
But the University of Oxford graduate, and former barrister and banker, told the BBC he had been the victim of a ruthless political insurgency.
“The right [wing] in the Liberal Party essentially operate like terrorists,” he said.
“Now I’m not suggesting that they use guns and bombs or anything like that, but their approach is one of intimidation.
“And they basically say to the rest of the party… if you don’t do what we want, we will blow the show up. Famously one of the coup leaders said to me, ‘you have to give in to the terrorists’.”
In his offices overlooking Sydney’s harbour are small-framed photographs of Mr Turnbull with world leaders: former US president Barack Obama, Indian PM Narendra Modi and Indonesian president Joko Widodo.
There is also a picture with Mr Trump. Not so much a happy snap – the pair famously clashed over a refugee swap deal and there’s hostility, too, over the environment.
“Trump is playing a very destructive role in terms of climate action. Trump makes no bones about it. He says global warming is rubbish,” Mr Turnbull said.
“Trump is trying to put a brake on global action to reduce emissions. The lack of American leadership is extremely damaging.”
He added: “How many more coral reefs have to be bleached? How many more million hectares of forest have to be burned?
“How many more lives and homes have to be lost before the climate change deniers acknowledge they are wrong?”

The fact that he is a “climate denier” is one of two reasons that Trump has attracted support from across the aisle, the other being his position on trade deals. Hmmmmm, let me see….trade deals that are designed to undermine national sovereignty (and democracy), and the battle against climate change, which is designed to undermine national sovereignty (and democracy)…..Does anyone see a pattern here?

It is very hard to get, try to hunt it up through your local library system, its worth the effort. I am just reading it now for the first time after hunting it for a while, I am almost finished. Trump does say some strange things, to be sure, but dirty air from burning fossil fuels does form a blanket in the atmosphere that traps heat, and dirty particles in the air land on the ground and are washed into waterways and contaminate water, and the acid in the particulates have raised acidity levels in the oceans, so in this case his shorthand way of speaking is not so far off the mark. And please provide supporting documentation showing the payments Elaine Dewar received from the oil industry. Because she DOES provide documentation to support her position that mining and oil interests were funding the climate change movement in the eighties, and provided the funding for the Rio earth summit. So if you are going to attack her, please adhere to the same standard of proof that she adhered to in her book. Most of the funding for protests against the Trans-mountain pipeline come from so-called “NGO’s” with close ties to the American government. The goal is to cut off easy Chinese access to oil from the Alberta tar sands, thereby preventing price competition from China with the US for tarsands oil, thereby holding the price down. Virtually none of these issues are as straightforward as they appear.

For a start the volatility in our politics is still a more recent phenomenon. It started in 2010 with then Labor PM Rudd being voted out by his party in favour of Julia Gillard. In the 5 elections since Rudd’s Labor governmemt won in 2007 a PM has not finished a full 3 year term (yes, the terms are too short although that perspective might be different if you are leader). As I am not a qualified expert in these matters, so I can only comment on what I have observed, read about and seen. Climate change is, to me, an odd term as the climate changes every minute of every day. Global warming I think is a better term. However, whatever terminology is used, if it stops humanity from plundering the Earth with no concern for the consequences that can only be a good thing. Yes unfortunately this seems to be the case. For those who can’t access that book you mentioned, GlobalResearch have a very good article by the excellent investigative journalist William Endghal. He gives a brief but thorough run down of Davis participants who are involved in this rort. But let’s not jump to conclusions re morrison being a climate change denier. This does not make him squeaky clean. This ‘leader’ is running slipshod over known environment concerns and backing big business at the expense and wellbeing of the environment and Australian people. I have seen the William Endghal piece, I can second it, its quite good. Nowhere near as in-depth as the Dewar book, but hits the high (low?) points well. What is really amazing about the Dewar book is the access she got, and that will NEVER happen again, they know how vulnerable they are to being exposed, they were overly confident at that time (mid eighties), they will never make that mistake again. Bottled water is of course a huge contributor to pollution with tons of plastic waste. If Nestlé are on the climate change band wagon they are huge hypocrites. Not only are they stripping habitats of their natural water supply, they contribute to unnecessary waste. Bottled water in plastic containers should be banned stat! Clean up our tap water. If Malcolm Turnbull is so bright, how can he not see through the climate scam? Which of course he can, but it suits his cynical form of politics to pretend that warming is happening. As to the fires in Australia, Max Igan has done some interesting videos on the reasons for them, pointing out that the majority have been started on purpose. Don’t know if this is relevant but back in the 1980s the south of France was burning every summer.
