Turkish newspaper Hurriyet is reporting that a 62 year old woman who was carrying a sign saying “We are turning our backs on indecent Erdogan” at a protest in 2015 has been sentenced to a nearly one year prison term.
A court in the Turkish town of Didim sentenced the woman to an 11 month, 20 day prison term. The reasoning behind the conviction…the court stated that the banner could hurt President Erdogan’s dignity.
Perhaps it’s time for the EU’s Donald Tusk and Germany’s Angela Merkel to shower Erdogan with another six billion euros in EU taxpayer money, so that Turkey can clean up its dismal human rights and freedom of press record.

Turkey’s crackdown on journalists and restrictions on freedom of speech has been condemned by the international community, including the United Nations, the United States, the European Union, Russia and the Reporters Without Borders (RSF) organization.
The Turkish laws making it illegal to insult Turkey, the Turkish nation, or Turkish government institutions. According to media reports, more than 1,500 people in Turkey are being investigated for insulting the president.
Good thing we have NATO “democracies” like Turkey to spread freedom of the press to the unexceptional rest of the world.
