Witness the reaction to President Trump’s recent decision to redeploy nearly 12,000 troops away from Germany. “A serious error,” warned GOP Rep. Liz Cheney. Sen. Mitt Romney had a hawkish fit. Democratic Sen. Jeanne Shaheen alleged that only the Kremlin would cheer such a move.
She apparently hasn’t examined polls showing a plurality of Germans want the troops gone — and, more tellingly, that the vast majority, nearly 80 percent in some surveys, would prefer Berlin to stay neutral or even side with Russia in a hypothetical US-Russian conflict.

Why would she care what they want? They’re only Germans. American politicians don’t even care what US voters want.
As for “siding with Russia” – well, that’s what the troops are there to prevent, isn’t it?
They don’t fool me. If Germany ever finds itself in rapprochement with Russia on security issues and that new ‘European security architecture’ that Putin’s been alluding to for over a decade, NATO personnel will have to spend more on psychiatrists than armaments.
The German people have wanted the American troops out of Germany for a very long time. I also do not think that many American people pay much attention to whether the troops leave or stay in Germany or anywhere else in Europe. Trump still has not proved to the American voters that he is a leader and will be strong enough to pull troops out of Syria and Afghanistan. Well, all I can say is thank God Trump is saving Europe from perpetual servitude to Russia by continuing to pipe all Europe’s Russian gas through Ukraine and not through that new devil pipe Nord Stream 2.

By the end of the year Nord Stream 2 should be online. at the same time the Ukraine/Gazprom contract will have ended. Since 2014 and the US orchestrated and paid for overthrow of Ukraine, the US has effectively had it’s had on the EU gas supply valve. In 2021 with Nord Sream 2 online that ends. There is very little the US can actually do about gas supply to the EU after that. It will revert back to the fact that the EU needs cheap Russian gas and Russia needs Gas money for it’s budget. How you folks can support either side of this perpetual lesson in American ineptitude is beyond me.
One section of the German population that will be thrilled to see the back of the troops is the people who live near their bases. If what happens in Japan, S. Korea, etc. is anythng to go by, the number of assaults, rapes and instances of general anti-social behaviour will shoot right down. When you put a load of young, barely educated, hormone-crazed men (and sometimes women) in a place where they have immunity from any wrongdoing, you’ve got a recipe for disaster.
