The Swiss government has said it will abandon seven years of negotiations for a framework agreement with the EU, arguing Brussels had not met its conditions for the deal, which would have simplified relations between the pair.

And good for Switzerland!!! Ever since I started living in Europe, didn’t take me long to realize that the EU is more like a ‘straight jacket’, a bureaucracy that has taken away too much sovereignty from member sates…and Switzerland is not about to put up with this. Brussels believes it can impose it’s will on anyone…Wrong! But somehow an agreement will be reached. As Luxembourg’s FM stated: the EU needs Switzerland and Switzerland needs the EU. But not at any price.
Christoforo believes that Brexit has been good for the UK, it has not. It is a disaster. He is too anti EU. Good or not so good, we Europeans need Europe together, with and including the UK. ps Scotland is eager to get back in.

Well,my good fellow,at least the UK shows there is life after empire,since the American empire is nearing to a close,there was some lament after it’s loss, but now people basically just get on with life,it is painful but America will have to learn to do the same in the coming years
I had the same notion as well. A year ago Consortium News did an article talking about how Britain’s entry into the EEC in 1973 led to the EU being what it is today (e.g. during the 1990s Britain refused German reunification at first and relented on the condition that Germany replace its mark currency with the euro), “leaving Europe in a mess” as the article’s title implies. It’s probably not ironic that Charles de Gaulle was opposed to Britain’s entry on the grounds that Britain would be an American Trojan horse into European affairs.

The EU is not a Franco/German project, it is a US empire project. And, btw, free higher education is not considered “free stuff” in most civilized nations which believe that educating the next generation is the wisest investment a nation can make for its own benefit. The fact that the neoliberal US has reserved higher education only for the wealthy elite which can afford the outrageous cost has had the disastrous results we now see in a nation no longer able to compete globally and we have nothing but ignorant idiots in positions of power.

You say. Brexit has been bad for the U.K., but really, has it had a chance to do very much? I would not mind betting that the “pandemic” was started deliberately when Brexit negotiations were almost complete, to throw a spanner in the works and make things troublesome for Britain. Strange how the virus coincided almost at the beginning of the official date, January 31st 2020. How anyone can judge the success or failure of Brexit after such a short period of time, and in the midst of neo-liberalism waging a tyrannical war against its own people, both here and on the continent, is astonishingly short-sighted.
It reminds me somewhat of the dubious + dodgy EU – Ukraine ‘aggreement’ the Ukraine backed-out, the result was a ‘Coup D’éta’. Is this what Switzerland is heading as well? Just a thought!
they might try a Coup D’eta, but the Swiss will react quite differently from the way the Ukraine reacted. The Swiss will stand up to Nuland and her ilk. The Swiss have been proudly independent for too long for that. And besides, all those behind US coups have their illegally begotten monies stashed away safely in Swiss banks. The know it, and the Swiss banks know it, too. And the Swiss know which names go along with which numbered bank accounts.

I’d have no way of knowing, but I had the impression that it’s getting easier every day. These days only crooks are getting promoted, and the Biggest Crooks end up in high places lording it over us.
Brussels needed a cash cow particularly after Brexit, but the Swiss are too smart for the most incompetent Ursula and her team, so they abandoned the talks. Well done Switzerland.

You have to give it to the Swiss they have got a nice little racket going as a centre of world finance. And who can blame them. They do what’s good for them and what works for them. They are a sovereign state and not in the habit of kowtowing to anyone else. Good luck to them. Compare this to Europe. The euro is a currency which was designed on the German Deutsche mark. Germany and the northern bloc, Holland, Belgium, Luxembourg had roughly about the same levels of productivity. These meant that trade policy worked for this group. However the southern periphery was less productive than the northern bloc. This meant that the southern periphery could not adjust its costs and productivity to German levels. It therefore ran into trade deficits since its costs were higher than Germany’s.
