MOSCOW (Sputnik) – A second vessel with 650 tonnes of humanitarian aid for Cuba left Russia’s Novorossiysk port on Wednesday, bringing the total amount of aid for the the Caribbean nation to 930 tonnes, the Russian Emergencies Ministry press service said.
The first batch of humanitarian aid for Cuba was sent on October 8. According to the ministry, there were 17 containers on board totaling 280 tonnes. The cargo mainly included construction materials and medicines.
“The vessel with the humanitarian aid left Novorossiysk for Cuba at 02:00 p.m. [11:00 GMT] with 650 tonnes of cargo on board,”
the press service said.
On September 23, Emergencies Minister Vladimir Puchkov said that Russia would deliver more than 1,200 tonnes of construction materials as humanitarian assistance to Cuba, hit by devastating Hurricane Irma.
In September, the Caribbean region, including Cuba and the southeast of the United States, have been hit by a number of hurricanes. Hurricane Irma, is considered to be one of the strongest hurricanes ever recorded in the Atlantic basin, which caused dozens of deaths. The hurricane caused significant damage to Cuban energy and agriculture sectors.
