May tells Brexiters in Chequers meeting she’ll quit if they vote for her Brexit deal

Reported by Robert Peston via iTV…

I am reliably told that Theresa May told Boris Johnson, Iain Duncan Smith, Steve Baker, Jacob Rees Mogg, David Davis et al at Chequers that she will quit if they vote for her deal, including the backstop they hate.

But she gave no specifics. So there is not a lot of trust she would actually quit.

And the problem is that even if she persuades all Tory ERG MPs to vote for her unamended Withdrawal Agreement, which she won’t (because although Mogg and his supporters may succumb to her call for loyalty, Baker and the Brexiter purists will resist her blandishments) and she also successfully woos Northern Ireland’s 10 DUP, she still does not have the numbers.

May has alienated too many Labour MPs and Tory Remainer ultras (Grieve, Greening, Gyamah inter alia) to win the vote. So even with May offering herself for ritual sacrifice on the Brexiter altar, the ERG Brexiters and DUP may well say thank you very much, and vote against her anyway.

Why should they compromise their principles, and alienate their loyal supporters, for May’s doomed project?

I really hope the UK crashes out of the EU on 29/03/19 without any sort of deal in place.

Yes, better crash out. Nobody can trust that lying witch Theresa May.

May is out regardless. As long as Boris and Mogg realise that and bide their time we’ll be out. Might as well let the inevitable happen and pick up the pieces. Never has their been such a disgrace of a PM. Even Chamberlain showed greater leadership and commitment in trying to appease the enemy and avoid war (still a bad move considering the writing on the wall), yet May is nothing more than a belligerent failure who is clearly conspiring with the enemy.

May should have quit after her historic defeat in the first vote on the Brexit deal. She missed the moment for an honorable exit. Now she wants to save her reputation by begging the MPs to vote for her deal in order to quit just so as to make her exit more honorable? And if the MPs voted on that deal for a third time and were in fact to accept it – why should she quit when she finally got success? And where would that leave the MPs – having fallen for May’s scam and the people of U.K.… Read more »

The people aren’t so much gullible as blatantly lied to. Most vote on a promise (nothing new) and generally expect a lack of or a lack lustre delivery. May has so openly DEFIED the people after only being elected on a technicality. The fall out from this has fractured the electorate so completely that both Labour and Conservative are now unelectable and the civil unrest in the UK as a whole is very probable, especially in Northern Ireland.

Oh yes, let’s trust a politician. Her truth telling record is not that great.

One of the greatest hoaxes in US history. Will liars be held accountable?
