CAIRO (Sputnik) – An appellate court in Cairo on Saturday upheld a life sentence for former Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi, accused of espionage for Qatar, local media reported.

According to the Ahram daily, the court also backed death penalties for three accomplices of the former head of state.

Morsi and his supporters have been accused of collecting classified documents and transferring them to Qatari intelligence agency. The defendants have repeatedly refused to plead guilty.

Since Morsi was removed from office by the Egyptian army in July 2013, a number of cases have been opened against him. Hundreds of Egyptians have been killed in clashes that took place after Morsi was overthrown.

In early June, Egypt, alongside Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates broke off diplomatic relations with Qatar, accusing it of supporting terrorism and interfering in other states’ internal affairs. Doha has denied these allegations.
