(Sputnik) – UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson along with two other executives had contacts with those, who are mentioned in the FBI probe of alleged Russian interference in 2016 US Presidential campaign, the Observer newspaper reported citing its sources.

To be more precise, three senior incumbent and former Foreign Office officials, including Johnson, had encounters with Trump campaign foreign policy adviser George Papadopoulos and Maltese academic Joseph Mifsud living in the United Kingdom.

The US Department of Justice revealed on Monday that Papadopoulos pleaded guilty on October 5 to making false statements to FBI agents pertaining to Russian actors with whom he contacted while acting as an adviser.

Alok Sharma, a foreign parliamentary under-secretary of state in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, had met Maltese academic Joseph Mifsud “not at once”. Boris Johnson was among speakers during one of the events, where they also had a conversation together.

Moreover, the media outlet also discovered that there was a meeting between Papadopoulos and Tobias Ellwood, then a senior minister in the Foreign Office, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in September 2016.

The US Congress is currently investigating Russia’s alleged meddling in last year’s US presidential election. The FBI has been carrying out a similar investigation under Special Counsel Robert Mueller. A number of hearings regarding the issue have been held in Congress, but intelligence service officials did not provide any evidence, claiming that the information was confidential. Russia denies meddling in the 2016 US election, calling the accusations absurd.
