Maduro said that investigators were able to determine that Figuera was the driving force behind the attempt, and was apparently doing it at the behest of Washington.

“Investigations have succeeded in proving that General Manuel Ricardo Cristopher Figuera has been recruited by the CIA for more than a year,” Maduro said, adding that justice would be served on the “traitor” Figuera “sooner rather than later.”

After the coup flopped, opposition leader Juan Guaido, recognized as ‘interim president’ of Venezuela by the US and 50 other countries, lamented that the opposition did not have enough manpower and supporters within government circles.

While the opposition seemed to have been poorly prepared for a decisive push to topple Maduro, it might be explained by the fact that Figuera was apparently in a hurry to rush the coup before his imminent arrest.

Maduro revealed that he was given a heads-up by Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino, Supreme Court chief Maikel Moreno, and chief of the General Directorate of Military Counterintelligence, Iván Hernández Dala, about Figuera’s “strange behavior” in the run-up to the coup attempt.

Figuera was going to be fired and arrested at 9:00am on April 30, and that is what apparently prompted him to set the coup in motion, Maduro said.

The president also accused the former spy chief of spreading false rumors about Padrino and Moreno’s intent to join the opposition, both considered “honorable patriots” by Maduro.

Figuera became one of the most senior officials to switch sides and join the Guaido-led opposition. In a letter circulated after he broke ranks with Maduro, he wrote that his decision was prompted by his desire to “rebuild the country” and fight rampant corruption.

His defection earned lavish praise from US Vice President Mike Pence, who cited Figuera’s example as a rallying call for those Venezuelan serviceman who don’t want to suffer under US sanctions. Pence personally announced the lifting of all sanctions from Figuera on Tuesday, commending him for “taking a stand for the Bolivarian constitution and libertad.”

Since Venezuela has investigated Figuera and found him guilty of colluding with, and working for the enemy, declare him a treasonous enemy of Venezuela, revoke his rights to Venezuelan citizenship, sentence him in absentia to a firing squad or life imprisonment in solitary confinement should he dare to return to Venezuela, and issue a warrant for his arrest. There. Will that do it? Scratch that about the firing squad. Venezuela was the first country (still existing) in the world to abolish the death penalty for all crimes, doing so by Constitution in 1863. Meanwhile, back in Murderland, 25 people were… Read more »

Figuera deserves to be tried and convicted for treason. Pence certainly makes it clear that he approves of treason. Let’s see how he reacts when we oust him! Buy s larger problem now is that Figuera was the Intel chief of Venexuela and had access to classified information which he will all leak to the US. It will need countermeasures to protect Venezuelan sovereignty and independence. The US will exploit any apparent weakness they can and they will use the Intel Figuera brings them. Guaido can now be arrested for conspiracy to treason with Figuera. Ironically, Guaido laments that the… Read more »

Re “Pence certainly makes it clear that he approves of treason.” So he approves of something that is a crime in the U$ constitution? Or does he mean that treason is fine anywhere outside the U$? He certainly means that it’s okay for the U$ to encourage treasonous acts by people in other countries. “Constitutionally, citizens of the United States owe allegiance to at least two sovereigns. One is the United States, and the other is their state. They can therefore potentially commit treason against either, or against both. At least fourteen people have been charged with treason against various… Read more »

Pence thinks treason is fine and necessary anywhere in the world except in the US and its most loyal colonies (he’d certainly disapprove of treason in Germany).

Pence is such a propagandist! Figuera is a traitor to the Bolivarian revolution and was helping the U.S. failed attempt to overthrow it.

It is amazing that people like Pence think that people can’t see through their doublespeak.

You are very close to Maduro, Erdogan and other monsters Duran and for sure this is not good. You lose points. Even if you have right for some matters. As a Greek proverb says ”the enemy of my enemy, he is NOT my friend”.
You follow a bad policy.

I believe that President Putin’s Syrian strategy also works in Venezuela. Russia is offering to help solve Venezuela’s problems, just like Russia is helping Syria. In the summer of 2015, Russia agreed with its ally in Damascus to establish a Russian air base in Hmeimim, Syria. The Russians also work closely with Iranian forces and militias to take back territory from anti-government rebels. President Putin is a loyal ally of Syria and of Venezuela, where a Russian air base has been installed in the island of La Orchilla. Of course, it is in Russia’s interest to keep Syria’s President Bashar… Read more »
