Israel’s raid appears to have been intended to disrupt the ongoing offensive against ISIS but has provoked a powerful response.
As the Syrian army presses deeper into the Jihadi controlled districts of eastern Aleppo, the sighting of Hezbollah fighters and of a senior Hezbollah commander in the city suggests that the Syrian army and its allies are preparing for intense urban warfare and street fighting in the city.
Just as Russia supported the Spanish Republic in its fight against international fascism in the 1930s, so Russia is supporting the Syrian Republic in its fight against international Wahhabi Jihadism today. The difference is that today it is the Republic which will win.
Denunciations by the US of Iran as the world’s main state sponsor of terrorism are way off the mark. The record shows that Iran is not involved in terrorism to any significant degree and that it is Wahhabist Sunni groups ultimately connected to Saudi Arabia, not Shia groups connected to Iran, which are the main practitioners of terrorism.
Syria was targeted for destruction because of its key role in the Arab world’s Axis of Resistance against Israeli and US expansion. That is why Hezbollah – the other part of the Axis – fights alongside the Syrian army in the Syrian conflict, whilst Syria supports Hezbollah’s struggle in Lebanon.
