SOUTH KOREA: President Moon refuses dialogue with Pyongyang – threatens to “destroy” North Korea if provoked

It comes as South Korea launched two of its own missiles while the DPRK’s missile was still airborne.

After presiding over a National Security Council meeting in the aftermath of North Korea’s latest missile launch, South Korean President Moon Jae-in said that he is now faced with an “impossible situation”.

He then stated,

“In case North Korea undertakes provocations against us or our ally, we have the power to destroy (the North) beyond recovery. I hope the people will trust the government’s determination and efforts, and go about their lives without wavering”.

This is Moon’s strongest statement about Seoul’s military perspective on the DPRK since becoming President in May of 2017.

Moon further said that he will no longer seek to initiate any dialogue with the leadership in Pyongyang. Instead, he remarked,

“Dialogue is impossible in a situation like this. International sanctions and pressure will further tighten to force North Korea to choose no other option but to step forward on the path to genuine dialogue.”

In this sense, he has adopted an attitude not dissimilar from that of the United States which asserts that only through pressure and sanctions will North Korea itself initiate some kind of diplomatic process.

It has further been reported that South Korea launched two missiles form a position near the North Korean border, while the North Korean missile was still airborne. The South Korean missiles both landed in the Pacific Ocean.

Shortly thereafter, Russian President Vladimir Putin condemned North Korea’s launch, citing his “deep concern”.

“Want more posts like this?” On my email? Seriously? Never! Do I want sticky headers and footers on my mobile device? Absolutely not! Do I want a bunch of articles below the comments on my mobile device chewing into my data plan? F*** no! That goes for social media buttons too! As if a person can’t copy and paste a URL. Get your shite together Duran. The new mobile site layout is crappie at best. Even the font. Not everyone has 20 yr old eyes. Other than that, happy Friday and have a great weekend.

I certainly agree with you. I love reading the Duran, but there are too many really bad advertisments, that no-one would be interested in anyway, like stupid computer-games in outerspace for example. One can hardly read an article anymore…. and I use a laptop not a mobile divice, but still a good 30% of the screen is covered with the adverts and links.

I don’t know which browser you are using but with Chrome and Firefox you can download the extension Ublock Origin. It is by far the best ad blocker. I clean all the pages from all my favorite sites.

ABP is more resource heavy. I used to use it but it’s no longer necessary.

🙂 I have no idea what you mean….
My pet-tech sets the stuff up and arguing just creates problems when it’s an own kid who knows-it-all. (His favourite reprimand is “I TOLD you that!”)

Absolutely!
But I don’t have the problem at the moment as I lent my fancy phone and am currently using the one Noah brought with him on the ark and … I don’t use a phone to surf internet sites much. Small crappy and inconvenient – I use a PC. (I like a decent keyboard!)
…..But if I was it would pee me off something horrible :-))

So lets see if we can get this clear now. In looking at a map you’d see that a missile hitting the Pacific fired from North Korea would “have ” to go over Japanese territory. Likewise a missile (or two) fired from South Korea would also have to go over Japanese territory to hit in the Pacific.I see the Japanese whining about the North Korean missile, and yet not a word of complaint so far about the two South Korean missiles. The North Koreans just need to tell South Korea and Japan to shut their pie holes, and talk to the hand. And… Read more »

Unless Russia and China are ready to offer officially to protect North Korea from US attack. I don’t think “little Kim” gives a flying f… about their opinion. Their caving into the US makes them pretty useless in this situation.

Moon’s statement can be read in a very different way. “In case North Korea undertakes provocations against us or our ally, we have the power to destroy (the North) beyond recovery. I hope the people will trust the government’s determination and efforts, and go about their lives without wavering”. First, the fundamental facts of the situation as addressed in this statement: S. Korea can “destroy beyond repair”, i.e., annihilate, N. Korea, … and N. Korea can do the same to S. Korea, nucs or no nucs, missiles or no missiles. This mutual-deterence configuration would be stable were there a problem… Read more »

DPRK gets cruel sanctions put on it, the USA and South Korea continue their military exercises (of course the US being a miserable war economy cannot help itself) and you expect the people of the north, to bend over? You want peace, the ones with real power need to show they are serious. But we know, it ain’t going to happen, because this has nothing to do with peace for the people of the Korean Peninsula but with US geopolitical games against China and Russia i.e. Asian Pivot 2.0 BTW It seems a lot of people forget that the Southern… Read more »

And yet Moon called for peace and dialog at the UN General Assembly meeting 6 days after this statement. In addition, it was reported today (Sept. 21) that Trump just imposed new sanctions on North Korea. That sounds like a step back from Trumps rhetoric at the UN.
