As the vote for independence in Scotland approaches, many people forget that the UK was once an empire that encompassed much of the world.
If Scotland does decide to go it alone, and vote YES for independence this week, it will join a long list of nations that have broken off from the British Empire. It is quite amazing how large and vast the Empire was, and equally amazing how quickly it fell apart.
Here are all the countries that used to be part of the British Empire along with the date their independence was finally recognised by the UK.
