ST. PETERSBURG (Sputnik) – Authorities of Russia’s northern Republic of Karelia hope that the region will attract interest of tourists from China, and are working on the issue, the Republic’s head Artur Parfenchikov told Sputnik.

“We are also starting to work with the Chinese tourists, we are preparing a twinning agreement with the Fujian province. We have shot several advertising videos that are being broadcast on the Chinese TV. I think, Chinese tourists will also be interested in Karelia,”

Parfenchikov said.

According to the government of Karelia, the tourists from China may be interested in water tourism, eco-tourism, as well as in history and culture of the region. The region’s authorities also plan to organize special tours for the tourists to discover Karelian cuisine.

In 2017, the number of tourists arriving in Russia from China is expected to grow by some 20 percent, deputy chairman of Russia’s state tourism agency Rostourism Nikolay Korolyov said earlier this year.
