Gunnar Bentz and Jack Conger leave Rio as angry mob confronts US swimmers [Video]

Rio locals are pissed off at Team USA Swimming, and they showed it.

U.S. Swimmers Gunnar Bentz, 20, and Jack Conger, 21, have been allowed to leave Rio after they confessed to police that the robbery Lochte said went down was not a robbery, but simply a drunken guys night out that resulted in a broken bathroom door at a local gas station.

As the two US swimmer left for the airport, an angry mob confronted them and their getaway vehicle, booing and jeering the Olympic athletes..screaming for them to “vai” from Brazil.

I just can’t help to think that the US spent the better half of six months making sure that Russian athletes would be banned and vilified during the Rio games in a political smear campaign, only to have karma boomerang back at team USA…now branded as a bunch of dumb and drunk liars.

Meanwhile none of the swimmers have apologized, but the US Olympic Committee has officially said sorry, calling it…

–“a distracting ordeal in the midst of what should rightly be a celebration of excellence.”

“The behavior of these athletes is not acceptable, nor does it represent the values of Team USA or the conduct of the vast majority of its members. We will further review the matter, and any potential consequences for the athletes, when we return to the United States.”

USA Swimming said a ‘lapse in judgment and conduct’ was to blame for the entire charade.

The Daily Mail reports

Eliseu Padilha, Brazil’s Presidential Chief of Staff, has said the swimmers should be held accountable.

Conger and Bentz were hauled off a plane and prevented from leaving Brazil by the country’s authorities on Wednesday evening.

After being taken off United Airlines flight 128 to Houston at Rio’s Galeao International Airport, they spent more than three hours being interrogated by the Federal Police before they were allowed to leave at 1:44am local time.

They then told Brazilian officials that the robbery story was fabricated.

At a press conference on Thursday, officials said that the men were never robbed – and that it was the swimmers who had caused damage on Sunday.

Chief of Civil Police Fernando Veloso said in a press conference that the men were inebriated, breaking down the door of a bathroom, a soap dispenser and a mirror.

A source confirmed to Daily Mail Online that the men refused to pay for the damage until a gun was brandished by a gas station security guard.

Apology or no apology, Rio locals are pissed off, and they showed it…

Locals incensed by the damage inflicted on Brazil’s international reputation screamed insults and booed at the tops of their voices, branding the pair ‘liars’ and a ‘disgrace’ to their country.

The crowd surged forward and tried to grab them as they continued to bombard them with abuse.

Bentz and Conger remained silent but looked visibly shaken as they climbed into a USA consulate car.

Demonstrators continued to bang on the roof on the BMW as it tried to pull away, police having to rush out to keep the mob from the vehicle.
