The Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) has detained two ISIS terrorists in Moscow. The terrorists were caught while planning an attack to take place on the 1st of September, when Russia celebrates the Day of Knowledge which celebrates the beginning of the new school year.
According to the FSB, the terrorists were “detected and suppressed the criminal activity of two immigrants from the Central Asian region, who were plotting to carry out terrorist attack in places of mass gathering on 1 September this year”.
Russians of all faiths and backgrounds have been debating whether to change this year’s Day of Knowledge as the 1st of September for several reasons. This year, the 1st of September coincides with the Muslim holiday Eid al-Adha (in Arabic), what Turkic speakers refer to as Kurban Bayram.
Previously, the leader of Russia’s opposition LDPR (Liberal Democratic Party of Russia) Vladimir Zhirinovsky had suggested moving the beginning of the new school year from the 1st of September of the 1st of October.
Zhirinovsky has stated that early September is still a warm time of year and children should be able to enjoy the time off of school in order to pursue recreational activities, enjoy the outdoors and participate in physical fitness initiatives.
Such a plan would also avoid the Day of Knowledge coinciding with a holiday which is widely observed by Russia’s substantial Muslim minority.
